Here is another, not-so-sunny video. Jose De Soto, director of the University of California Hansen Agricultural Center tells us of the dangers to Ventura County’s Citrus industry and home garden fruit trees. The Asian Citrus Psyllid can carry Huanglongbing disease, and introduction of this disease to our area will spell the end of home and commercial citrus production…

CAMARILLO COMMUNITY GARDEN’S EARTH DAY 2010

EXHIBITOR GUIDELINES

Sponsored by Camarillo Community Gardens and Pleasant Valley Recreation & Parks District, the 1st annual Earth Day event was created to foster environmental awareness and involvement in the community in “Growing Healthy Families.”

Visitors are encouraged to be mindful of the environmental impact of their daily lives and to help promote environmental responsibility in their own communities.

Participating in Camarillo’s Earth Day provides your organization an opportunity to reach a large, diverse crowd of visitors and interested community members. If you plan on distributing materials at the event, please consider the environmental impacts of your giveaways; is it durable, made from recycled content, are handouts printed double sided?

The environmental focus of this event is not intended for the purpose of advocating for or against any political or religious concerns. Anyone not acting in cooperation with this purpose will be asked to leave the event. In order to maintain the positive focus of Earth Day, all exhibitors must abide by the following guidelines:

All application materials and booth set-up requirements must be received by the established dead-lines.

Booth spaces will be assigned at the discretion of the event coordinator to ensure the flow of the event makes sense.

Upon check-in at the registration table on event day, exhibitors will receive a map of the event area designating your assigned location.

A sample copy of any printed materials (brochures, flyers, etc.) to be handed out at the event must be presented with the application.

Any materials deemed objectionable will not be allowed at the event.

Exhibitors cannot sell any merchandise at this event unless the Earth Day sponsors have previously agreed.

Food, candy or beverages may not be served at your booth unless you have been pre-approved by the Pleasant Valley Recreation & Parks District, the Camarillo Community Garden and the Ventura County Health Department for this event (see attached Exhibitor Application).

Please, no smoking in the event area.

Balloon decorations are prohibited.

Use of plastic bottles, polystyrene containers/plates, and cups is not permitted.

Exhibitors are asked to refrain from using microphones, speakers, or amplified music.

Exhibitors must arrive at the designated set-up time, be ready by the event start time and main-tain staffing at your designated booth for the duration of the event.

Scheduled EarthDay Activities:

Items are still coming in, so check back often!

Ventura County Master Gardeners

We are proud to have the Ventura County Master Gardeners at our event. The Master Gardeners will answer your gardening questions, and show you how to have a great garden – anywhere.

Planned Master Gardener presentations include both on-going demonstrations in the main area plus break-out sessions held in an adjacent area:

Sustainable Landscape Design, with topics that cover the basic fundamentals:

Landscaping in harmony with the natural conditions of the watershed.

Reducing waste and recycling materials.

Keeping greenwaste on site

Nurturing healthy soils while reducing fertilizer use.

Conserving water, energy and topsoil.

Using IPM to minimize chemical use.

Reducing stormwater runoff.

Creating wildlife habitat.

The Master Gardeners will have native plants that reflect the Sustainable Landscape design philosophy and present a little bit of cultural information on each.

They will have handouts and pamphlets from the University of California Cooperative Extension on these topics plus upcoming events sponsored by the Hanson Agriculture Center and the UCCE. Ventura County Master Gardener events include the Ventura County Fair, Weekend Garden Talks at the Hanson Agriculture Center and the upcoming Home Gardening Workshops. For more information, visit on the Ventura County Master Gardeners‘ web site.

Live Music

We will enjoy the acoustical offerings of a local string band, “Watermelon Pie”.

Kids Activities

Our gardening troop of Daisy Girl Scouts will be holding a hula-hoop session. Hooping is low impact, high intensity physical activity that burns 100 calories in 15 minutes. Laugh and have fun. A joyful all-body workout for all body types and skill levels. Jump Houses. Games. Bugs and Worms! Firetrucks!

Solar Exhibits

Watch as the sun cooks meals! Grow your own electricity! Live off the grid! Learn about this energy saving method! Lisa Spenser from Solar World will show you what is ‘HOT’ in solar!

BioDiesel Exhibits

See how waste cooking oil becomes fuel instead of toxic waste. Biodiesel takes the used oil made from renewable resources, and re-purposes it as fuel. Is this the future of internal combustion engines? Learn about it here!

Honda’s Newest Hybrid

Not ready for BioDeisel quite yet? Then see what Honda has in stored for you today!

Community Supported Agriculture

Meet your farmers! When you join a Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA), you buy a share in the farm. You receive weekly boxes packed with absolutely the freshest organic vegetables you can get without growing your own. Meet the farmers from two community CSAs and connect with your food.

Permaculture Exhibit

Jared Logan, local permaculture expert, prefers the ‘food forest’ over a regular garden. The goal of this gardening method is to duplicate a complete, natural food-web in your own yard. Learn more about the benefits and techniques of this fascinating concept as Jared shows you how to bring a ‘food forest’ home.

Native Plant Exhibits

Nopalitos Nursery, a local native plant grower, is providing a display of native plants. Native plants attract and shelter birds and beneficial insect as well as adding color and form to your landscape. The Master Gardeners will show you the beauty, habitat and cost-saving advantages of using natives in your landscape.

Pleasant Valley Park and Recreation

Will have information on a wide varieties of programs available to the community.

Ecologically Themed Books

Presented by Mrs. Figs & Steven Greenburg

Food SHARE

Food Share provides your excess home produce directly to those in need. Learn how easy it is to get your excess fruit and vegetables onto the the tables of those who really need it.

Sierra Club

The Sierra Club wants you! Learn about the benefits of membership.

The Camarillo Community Gardens are sponsoring the 1st Annual Camarillo Earth Day at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 Burnley Street, Camarillo, on Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM.

Our theme this year will be “Growing Healthy Families” — promoting healthy eating, educating the public on creating a sustainable community and environmental awareness.

This year’s event will feature live entertainment, children’s activities, and booths from local community organizations. Emphasis will be on growing as much of your own food as possible, buying from local farmers, recycling/reusing, water conservation, and making good food choices.

We hope your organization will consider joining us as an Earth Day Exhibitor. It will be a great opportunity to host a booth with information on your programs and services.

There is no charge to participate, we only ask that you are cognizant of our intent to educate our community on environmental consciousness and healthy alternative food choices. It is not for the purpose of promoting political, religious, or controversial messages. Exhibitors that choose to participate, are asked to follow our Exhibitor Guidelines; click here for a downloadable copy.

Click here to download the Exhibitor Application and Agreement and Waiver-Forms. Please provide an e-mail address with your application so we may contact you to confirm your participation. Waiver forms must also be provided for each person working at your booth. For anyone under the age of 18, please have a parent or guardian complete the Minor Waiver Form. Please submit your completed application and waiver forms by April 5.

For additional copies of waiver forms or questions, please contact Eileen Mannion at 383-2522 or by e-mail at: info@earthdaycamarillo.com or simply by filling out the contact form.

We would also appreciate any referrals of other potential exhibitors.

Finally, we would be happy to provide you Earth Day 2010 flyers and posters so you can help publicize the event. We look forward to receiving your application. Happy Earth Day!

Sincerely,
Camarillo Community Garden
